Delhi Govt Announces Work From Home Rules for Offices

In a major move aimed at reducing fuel consumption and tackling pollution, the Delhi government has announced a new “Work From Home” (WFH) policy for government offices. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that all Delhi government departments will implement a two-day WFH system every week as part of the “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan” campaign.

The government has also urged private companies and IT firms in the national capital to adopt a similar work model to help reduce traffic congestion and fuel usage. The announcement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens and institutions to save petrol and diesel.

According to the Delhi government, the initiative is designed to encourage public transport usage, reduce vehicle emissions, and lower pressure on city roads.

New Office Timings Introduced

Along with the WFH policy, the government has revised office timings to manage peak-hour traffic more effectively.

  • Delhi Government offices: 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM
  • Municipal offices: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM

Officials said the staggered timings are expected to ease congestion across key routes in the city.

‘Metro Monday’ and No Vehicle Campaign

The Delhi government has also launched a special “Metro Monday” initiative. Under this campaign, ministers and government officials will be encouraged to use the Delhi Metro every Monday instead of official vehicles. Citizens have also been requested to observe a “No Vehicle Day” once a week to support the fuel-saving campaign.

Petrol Allowance Reduced, No New Government Vehicles

As part of the new measures : Petrol allowances for government officials have been reduced by 20%. The Delhi government will not purchase any new vehicles for the next six months. Around 50% of official meetings will now be conducted online. The government believes these steps will significantly cut fuel expenses and carbon emissions.

Online Classes and Virtual Meetings Encouraged

Educational institutions and offices have also been advised to shift non-essential activities online wherever possible. Universities and colleges are being encouraged to conduct theoretical classes virtually, while courts have been requested to expand virtual hearings.

Extra Benefits for Employees Using Public Transport

To motivate employees to switch to public transport, the government announced additional transport allowances for Grade 1 to Grade 8 employees who spend a portion of their allowance on buses or metro services.

Officials say the broader goal of the campaign is to create a sustainable and environmentally responsible work culture in the capital while improving air quality and reducing traffic pressure.
