Heatwave in North and Central India: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued severe heatwave conditions across large parts of North and Central India even as southern regions prepare for a spell of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

IMD Issues Multiple Alerts

The IMD has issued an orange alert for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for today over New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. A red alert for warm night conditions has been sounded for Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

According to the latest weather bulletin, heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the next two days in several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, southwest Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Marathwada, and Odisha.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Southern India

Meanwhile, the southern peninsula is set to receive much-needed respite. Heavy rainfall is expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep till May 21.

The Met department has also forecast thundersqualls accompanied by strong winds over Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in Jammu and Kashmir, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Interior and Coastal Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, and the northeastern states.

Impact on Daily Life and Gujarat

The ongoing heatwave has pushed maximum temperatures well above normal in many parts of northwest and central India. Cities in Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana are witnessing scorching daytime temperatures, with warm nights adding to the discomfort of residents.

In Gujarat, including the Saurashtra region where Bhavnagar is located, hot and dry conditions continue with daytime temperatures hovering between 38°C and 40°C or higher.

Safety Advisory for Citizens

Heatwave in North and Central India: Health experts and the IMD have issued the following guidelines amid the severe heat : Stay hydrated and consume plenty of fluids, Avoid direct exposure to the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm, ,Wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothes, Check on elderly neighbors and family members regularly, Seek immediate medical help in case of dizziness, nausea, or rapid heartbeat. Farmers in rain-fed regions have expressed concern over the prolonged dry spell, while southern states are monitoring low-lying areas for possible waterlogging.
