PM Modi Sweden Visit 2026 – AI, Green Energy and Defence Partnership
PM Modi Sweden Visit 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Gothenburg today on a two-day official visit to Sweden, marking a major step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The visit forms the third leg of the Prime Minister’s broader European tour and comes at a significant moment following the implementation of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in January 2026.
The visit is expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, defence, innovation, green transition, and emerging technologies amid rapidly evolving global geopolitical and economic conditions.
Strong Economic and Trade Partnership
India and Sweden have witnessed growing economic engagement in recent years. Bilateral trade reached a record 7.75 billion US Dollars in 2025, reflecting the strong momentum in commercial ties. Swedish foreign direct investment (FDI) into India has totalled approximately 2.825 billion dollars between 2000 and 2025.
More than 280 Swedish companies currently operate in India across sectors such as manufacturing, clean technology, telecom, and engineering, while around 75 Indian firms have established operations in Sweden.
Officials noted that the current momentum in bilateral relations traces back to Prime Minister Modi’s 2018 Sweden visit, during which both countries launched the Joint Innovation Partnership for a Sustainable Future.
Focus on AI and Emerging Technologies
Technology cooperation is expected to remain a key pillar of discussions during the visit. Sweden, recognised globally for innovation and advanced industrial capabilities, is seeking deeper collaboration with India’s rapidly expanding digital and technology ecosystem.
Both sides are likely to prioritise partnerships in : Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digitalisation, Internet of Things (IoT), Advanced manufacturing, Research and innovation.
India and Sweden are also strengthening cooperation in the space sector. The Swedish Institute of Space Physics is contributing scientific instruments for the Indian Space Research Organisation Venus Orbiter Mission.
Defence Cooperation Gains Momentum
Defence and security cooperation has emerged as an important area of India-Sweden relations. The partnership is currently guided by the 2009 Defence Cooperation Agreement and the 2019 General Security Agreement.
Industrial collaboration in defence manufacturing has expanded under the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative. Swedish defence firms have increased investments in local production facilities, contributing to employment generation and technology transfer.
The two sides are expected to discuss further collaboration in defence manufacturing, industrial integration, and strategic security cooperation.
Green Transition and Climate Agenda
Climate action and sustainable industrial transition will also feature prominently during the visit. One of the flagship initiatives between India and Sweden is the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), launched in 2019 to support low-carbon transformation in heavy industries.
At COP28, both leaders launched LeadIT 2.0 for the 2024–2026 period, with a renewed focus on technology transfer, clean industrial growth, and mobilisation of technical support through the Industry Transition Platform.
Officials believe the partnership can play a major role in advancing sustainable industrialisation and green energy solutions globally.
Strategic Importance of the Visit
The visit is being viewed as an important milestone in India-Sweden relations at a time when both nations are seeking stronger cooperation in resilient supply chains, clean technologies, innovation, and strategic industries.
A major highlight of the programme will be a joint address by Prime Minister Modi and the Swedish Prime Minister to the European Round Table for Industry in the presence of the European Commission President.
Analysts say the growing synergy between the India-EU FTA, advanced technology collaboration, and green industrial initiatives could make the India-Sweden partnership a model for future global cooperation between developed and emerging economies.
