Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered the opening remarks at the ministerial meeting, stressing that peace and security remain central to the global order. Referring to ongoing international conflicts and rising geopolitical uncertainties, he emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving disputes and maintaining stability.

Focus on Sustainable Development and Technology

Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of sustainable development and called for adherence to the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities. He also noted that technological advancements are rapidly reshaping the global landscape and should be leveraged to promote inclusive growth and good governance.

BRICS Nations Stress Cooperation Against Terrorism

Addressing security concerns, the minister said BRICS countries share a strong interest in enhancing cooperation against terrorism. He added that ongoing conflicts, disruptions in trade and technology, climate-related challenges, and economic uncertainty have increased expectations from BRICS to play a constructive and stabilizing role in global affairs.

The External Affairs Minister also thanked participating nations for their continued commitment to strengthening BRICS cooperation. He pointed out that many countries continue to face pressing challenges related to energy, food, fertilizer, and health security.

The meeting is being attended by senior representatives from several BRICS member and partner nations, including Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, along with delegates from other participating countries.

Discussions on Global Governance and Regional Issues

During the discussions, ministers are expected to exchange views on major regional and global developments, reforms of multilateral institutions, and ways to deepen cooperation among BRICS nations.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The agenda draws inspiration from Prime Minister Modi’s “Humanity First” and people-centric vision for BRICS cooperation.

Day Two to Focus on BRICS@20 and Governance Reforms

On the second day of the meeting, BRICS member and partner countries will participate in sessions focused on “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” and reforms of global governance and the multilateral system.
