IMD Issues Severe Heatwave Alert as Southwest Monsoon Advances Across India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday announced further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman region, while simultaneously issuing heatwave warnings for large parts of North and Central India.
According to the latest IMD press release, the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, Comorin area, southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal, most parts of the Andaman Sea, and the entire Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The weather agency stated that conditions remain favorable for further advancement of the monsoon during the next few days. IMD has projected the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala around May 26, with a model error margin of ±4 days.
Heatwave Conditions Intensify
While monsoon activity gains momentum in southern regions, several northern and central states are expected to experience intense heatwave conditions over the coming week. IMD warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely over parts of : Northwest India, Central India, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, and Bihar. Maximum temperatures over Northwest India are expected to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius between May 18 and May 24.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Southern and Northeastern States
The weather department has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall activity over several regions, including : Northeast India, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Coastal and Interior Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are likely in multiple states during the next few days.
Strong Winds and Storm Activity
IMD reported gusty winds reaching speeds of 90–140 kmph in parts of Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Karnataka due to severe thunderstorm activity. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow local weather advisories.
Gujarat Continues to Reel Under Heat
In Gujarat, including the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, above-normal temperatures and hot, humid weather conditions are expected to persist in the short term. However, IMD indicated that temperatures may witness a slight decline after May 19.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring monsoon progression and evolving heatwave patterns as India transitions toward the peak monsoon season.
