Heatwave Advisory – Govt Issues Guidelines to Protect People During Extreme Summer Heat

In view of rising temperatures and severe heatwave conditions across several parts of the country, the Ministry of Ayush has issued a comprehensive public health advisory asking citizens to take preventive measures against heat-related illnesses during the ongoing summer season.

The advisory emphasizes adequate hydration, avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours, wearing light cotton clothing, and consuming seasonal fruits and electrolyte-rich fluids to reduce the effects of extreme heat.

Heatstroke Declared a Medical Emergency

The Ministry advised people to remain alert for symptoms of heat stress and heat-related illnesses, including dizziness, headache, nausea, dehydration, fainting, seizures, high body temperature, and altered mental status. It warned that heatstroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical attention.

In severe cases, citizens have been advised to contact emergency helpline numbers 108 and 102 for immediate assistance.

Special Care Recommended for Vulnerable Groups

The advisory highlighted that infants, children, pregnant women, elderly citizens, outdoor workers, and people suffering from chronic illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease are particularly vulnerable during heatwave conditions and require special care and monitoring.

It also recommended safety measures at workplaces and outdoor gatherings, including shaded rest areas, regular hydration breaks, worker acclimatization, and awareness regarding symptoms of heat stress.

Traditional Cooling Remedies and Seasonal Foods Suggested

The advisory incorporates wellness practices from various Ayush systems including Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Unani, and Homoeopathy. It recommends hydrating beverages such as buttermilk, coconut water, and lemon-based drinks to help regulate body temperature.

Traditional preparations like Nimbukaphala Panaka, Amra Prapanaka, and Chincha Panaka have also been suggested for protection against extreme heat.

The Ministry further encouraged the inclusion of cooling and hydrating foods such as cucumber, watermelon, musk melon, ash gourd, tomatoes, and lime in the daily diet during the summer season.
